The talk show and inauguration of FPCI Chapter BINUS took place on March 27, 2018. The event was held at BINUS University (Anggrek Campus). It ran from 8:15 AM until 12:00 PM.

The topic was “10 Years Economic Crisis: Indonesia’s Perspective.”

The main speakers were Andry Asmoro, S.E., M.A. (Senior Economist at PT. Bank Mandiri Tbk) and H.E. Dr. Dino Patti Djalal (Founder of FPCI). Prof. Tirta Nugraha Mursitama, Ph.D. (Head of IR Department BINUS) was the keynote speaker. (Photos show the event’s atmosphere and speakers).

Prof. Tirta opened the talk show. He noted that the economic crisis began in Indonesia in 1998. Dr. Lili Yulyadi moderated the discussion. He posed the main question: Is the “economic crisis” real or not?

Mr. Andy, the speaker, described Indonesia’s economic situation since the crisis. He believes Indonesia has successfully navigated a long economic journey.

Therefore, he advised Indonesia not to worry about an economic crisis. The key is careful government management. Specifically, the government must manage debt to boost economic growth. He believes the main current issue is a structural problem. For example, Indonesia lacks a blueprint to manage the industrial sector. Managing fuel subsidy spending is another problem.

Organizational roles are crucial. Organizations like OJK (Financial Services Authority) can manage lending. Furthermore, maintaining relations with the IMF is important. They can provide aid and international cooperation during a crisis.

Currently, the government has economic projects. Examples include the Komodo land project. They are also changing how subsidies are given (through banks). Mr. Andy added that commodities drive Indonesia’s economy. He believes Indonesia should use the manufacturing and agricultural sectors for development.

Foreign Policy and Conclusion

Mr. Dino, representing FPCI, spoke next. He suggested Indonesia should use the G20 as a platform. This platform is for Indonesia’s economic foreign policy. Indonesia also needs to create reform. This means changing the mindset and maintaining the democracy system.
