Empowering Youth Against Online Extremism: BINUS Students Participate in BNPT-Hedayah Media and Information Literacy Workshop

From February 25 to 27, 2025, two students from International Relations Dept. BINUS University, Ariel Jeremy and Cynthia Ayu Novita Silalahi, had the opportunity to participate in the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Workshop, organized by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) of Indonesia in collaboration with Hedayah, a global leader in countering violent extremism. Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jakarta, the workshop brought together young leaders, experts, and policymakers to enhance digital literacy and combat the spread of extremist narratives online.
The event was part of the broader initiative “Preventing Extremism and Violent Extremism Online in Southeast Asia,” which has been running since 2023. The workshop focused on equipping participants with the necessary skills to identify, analyze, and counter extremist content in the digital space. Through a series of expert-led discussions, group exercises, and hands-on training, attendees gained insights into the dynamics of online radicalization, misinformation, and the role of digital platforms in countering extremist propaganda.
As active participants, Ariel Jeremy and Cynthia Ayu Novita Silalahi demonstrated exceptional engagement and critical thinking in discussions, showcasing their dedication to tackling the challenges of misinformation and online extremism. Their involvement in the workshop underscores BINUS University’s commitment to producing globally aware, socially responsible graduates equipped to navigate complex international challenges.
This experience not only strengthened their understanding of digital resilience and counter-extremism efforts but also provided them with valuable skills to contribute to policy discussions, research, and advocacy efforts in the future.
By empowering young minds with the tools to analyze, respond to, and counter extremist narratives, this initiative marks a significant step in building a digitally literate, resilient society. We are proud of our students for representing BINUS University on such an impactful global stage and look forward to their continued contributions in this field.
