Indonesia – China Relations and BRI in Southeast Asia

On October 16, 2024, the IR Department at BINUS University welcomed Prof. Xu Liping, a Senior Fellow at the National Institute of International Strategy (NIIS) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing, China. Prof. Xu was joined by assistant research fellows, Dr. Tian Guang Qiang and Dr. Bi Hang Dong. Their visit represented an important moment in the discussions of academic cooperation between Indonesia and China, embraced by a passionate BINUS faculty keen to participate in constructive conversations.

The visit featured an engaging conversation that took place during the Kijang Initiative Forum (KIF) at BINUS Kijang. The discussion encompassed various topics, with a central emphasis on the political-economic environments of Indonesia and China. With Indonesia pursuing its bold initiatives under Prabowo’s guidance, aiming for the achievement of “Indonesia Emas 2025,” China has shown a strong interest in seeking collaborative opportunities. Prof. Xu highlighted China’s dedication to assisting Indonesia in reaching its national development objectives, pointing out possible sectors for collaboration that could drive Indonesia’s development change.

As the discussion progressed, attention turned to the partnerships in academia between BINUS University and NIIS, CASS. Prof. Xu emphasized the significance of enhancing connections between scholars from Indonesia and China, promoting intellectual exchanges that could aid in shaping policy and advancing academic research in both nations. The discussion highlighted the potential for future collaborations between the two institutions, setting the stage for joint research efforts and involvement in significant forums organized by NIIS, CASS, or BINUS. These partnerships would provide an opportunity for emerging scholars and professionals to take an active role in influencing Indonesia’s future, especially for those dedicated to fostering positive change through global collaboration.

The Kijang Initiative Forum featured contributions from International Relations Department faculty members of BINUS, such as Aditya Permana, S.Fil., M.Hum, Eryan Tri Ramadhani, S.Sos., LL.M., Ph.D, Dr. Miranda Paulina Tahalele, S.I.P., M.A., Dr. Lili Yulyadi Arnakim, Dian Novikrisna, and Rhevy Adriade Putra, S.I.P., M.A., Ph.D. The involvement of the faculty members underscored the university’s dedication to nurturing significant global connections and establishing avenues for international partnerships in both education and research.

The visit enhanced the scholarly connections between BINUS and NIIS, CASS while also reinforcing the robust partnership between Indonesia and China as both countries aim for a future of mutual growth and progress.
