ICOBIRD 2022

On Thursday, 13 October 2022, the International Relations Department of Binus University held the 11th International Conference on Business, International Relations, and Diplomacy (ICOBIRD).

ICOBIRD is an annual international conference held by the IR Department. This year, the conference focused on the theme “Contemporary Changes in World Order”, discussing contemporary changes in the world order, the responses to those changes, as well as the impacts and consequences.

The 11th ICOBIRD was also held in commemoration of 10 years of the IR Department, which was established in 2012. In the same year, the first ICOBIRD was held.

As the official opening of the conference, the 11th ICOBIRD invited three keynote speakers:

  1. Andi Widjajanto, Governor of the National Resilience Institute of the Republic of Indonesia (Lemhannas RI). Gov. Andi delivered a presentation entitled “GeoX”, referring to geopolitics in uncertainty.
  2. Faris Al-Fadhat, Vice Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). Dr. Faris presented about contemporary changes in global financial system, with a focus on the role of Indonesia in G20.
  3. Lena Rethel, Professor in International Political Economy at University of Warwick. Prof. Rethel talked about global governance of Islamic finance and halal food.

The speakers gave their keynote speeches during the morning session at 9:00-12:00 Jakarta time (GMT+7). Their sessions were moderated by an IR Department’s faculty member, Dr. Miranda Paulina Tahalele.

After the keynote speeches, the IR Department announced the result of Best Thesis Award 2022. The Best Thesis Award 2022 was an award for the best thesis papers by IR students whose thesis papers were submitted to ICOBIRD 2022.

After lunch break, the 11th ICOBIRD was resumed with presentations of the papers submitted in the parallel sessions. There were six parallel sessions:

  1. Parallel session 1A on foreign policy and diplomacy, moderated by Rhevy Adriade Putra, Ph.D.
  2. Parallel session 1B on security studies, moderated by Sukmawani Bela Pertiwi.
  3. Parallel session 1C on institution and management, moderated by Dr. Roseno Aji Affandi.
  4. Parallel session 1D on media and democracy, moderated by Tia Mariatul Kibtiah.
  5. Parallel session 2A on international political economy, moderated by Dayu Nirma Amurwanti.
  6. Parallel session 2B on contemporary issues and new media, moderated by Ella Syafputri Prihatini, Ph.D.

The 11th ICOBIRD was followed by an international symposium of JAS (Journal of ASEAN Studies) on the next day, 14 October 2022.
